It is not rare to see some very young children walking on the busy streets in towns and cities, hawking during school time, begging for alms and assisting persons with disability to beg for alms without any adult protection or guidance. Many children spend time on the streets during periods that should be spent in school or at home.
What is even worrying is that unscrupulous persons sometimes take advantage of the situation to cause harm to children, who because they are innocent and ignorant are very vulnerable.
To support various efforts to address the situation, a non- governmental organization (NGO) committed to the welfare of the children, School In The Street (SITS) as commenced classes for out of School children in Ikorodu , Lagos State.
Speaking during the event , the founder of the organization, Mr Olakunle Sanni said that ” as part of preparation to resume literacy classes and vocational training for street children/youths in Ikorodu after a long break occasioned by COVID 19 and #ENDSARS protest, School In The Street had an orientation and re- registration exercise to prepare the children ahead of resumption”.
The street children/ youths expressed their joy and look forward to commencement. Aside the orientation and re- registration exercise, they were served food and were also provided with personal hygiene kits which included toothpaste, toothbrush and bathing soap.
