Newly sworn-in Kano Governor Abba Yusuf fires Ganduje’s appointees, revokes sale of assets

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state, popularly known as Abba Gida-Gida, has terminated the employment of several government officials appointed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

In an executive order that he signed, the new governor instructed that “all political appointees heading government MDAs and companies are hereby relieved of their duties with immediate effect.”

He also dissolved all boards of MDAs, companies, and institutions of higher learning, effective immediately.

The governor directed the state’s security agencies to promptly assume control of all public properties that were sold by the previous government.

“I am announcing today that all public places and assets that were unethically plundered and sold by the Ganduje administration should be seized by law enforcement agencies, led by the Police, the DSS, Civil Defense, and Hisbah, pending the final decision of the government,” he said.

Among the properties referred to by the governor are “lands in and around schools, religious and cultural sites, hospitals and clinics, graveyards and green areas, and along the city wall of Kano,” as well as other landed properties and assets belonging to Kano State, both within and outside the state, which were sold to cronies and agents.

He declared that a Judicial Commission of Inquiry would be established in the following days “to ensure that all individuals who perpetrated these acts and those who aided and abetted them are brought to justice.”

He stated that all the measures he would be implementing in the coming days were aimed at resetting the state and repositioning it on the path of honor, dignity, respect, and responsibility, as well as progress and prosperity.

Likewise, the governor announced the immediate formation of a Taskforce on Refuse Disposal, Drainage Evacuation, and Street Cleaning (Operation Nazafa), consisting of various stakeholder groups yet to be disclosed.

“In the upcoming days, I will officially launch a statewide campaign with self-help groups to drive this operation. Within the next few weeks, all the dumpsites will be cleared, all our streets will be clean, all our drainages will be desilted, and a sustainable system for maintaining cleanliness and clearing the dumps will be established,” he said.

To support the campaign for a cleaner Kano, he mandated that as of June 1, all vehicles using the state’s roads must have a dustbin, and all businesses, including shops and stalls, must have dustbins for the proper collection and disposal of waste and refuse.
