President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presented Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as his nominee for the role of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose two-term tenure officially ended.

At a meeting of the National Council of State, members unanimously approved Amupitan’s appointment, clearing a major constitutional hurdle before his confirmation.

Amupitan is from Kogi State, marking the first time someone from that state has been nominated to head INEC. He is a professor of law with a specialization in company law, evidence, corporate governance, and privatization.

In line with constitutional requirements, Tinubu will now forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation.

Until the Senate acts, May Agbamuche‑Mbu, the most senior INEC National Commissioner, will continue serving as Acting Chairman of the commission.
