The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikorodu Branch’s Human Rights Committee has issued a public advisory following recent directives from the Police Service Commission (PSC).

According to the NBA Ikorodu Branch, vice-chaired by Olajide Abiodun, the PSC, under the leadership of Deputy Inspector General Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), has warned police officers against meddling in civil matters.

This directive specifically targets issues such as land disputes, rent disagreements, and marital conflicts. Officers found violating these guidelines will face disciplinary actions, potentially impacting their career advancements.

“The primary responsibility of the police force is to handle criminal cases and ensure public safety,” stated Olajide Abiodun, Vice Chairman of the NBA Ikorodu Branch. “Civil disputes should be addressed through legal channels, not through police intervention,” he emphasized.

In addition to clarifying police roles, the Police Service Commission has committed to enhancing transparency in police recruitment processes. A newly established Joint Oversight Body, in collaboration with the Inspector General of Police, aims to streamline recruitment procedures.

This initiative includes the setup of a Recruitment Secretariat at the PSC headquarters, tasked with overseeing all recruitment activities to ensure fairness and accountability.

“We commend the Police Service Commission for these critical reforms,” added Olajide Abiodun. “These efforts are crucial in maintaining public trust and ensuring that the police force operates with integrity.”

The NBA Ikorodu Branch urges citizens to report any instances of police misconduct or improper involvement in civil matters to the appropriate authorities. For further information or legal assistance, individuals are encouraged to contact the NBA Ikorodu Branch Human Rights Committee.

The announcement serves as a reminder to uphold legal standards and promote justice within the community, emphasizing the importance of respecting legal processes in resolving civil disputes.
