The National Tank Initiative has released a statement expressing concern over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a press release signed by Hon. (Prof.) Stephen Sinikiem Azaike, PhD, DSc, OON, Co-Chairman/National Coordinator of the National Think Tank Nigeria, the group acknowledged and commended the president’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the state but emphasized the importance of adhering to due process and the rule of law.
The declaration, made by president Tinubu on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, suspended the executive governor, deputy governor, and state house of assembly for an initial period of six months, citing the need to address the protracted political crisis that has engulfed the state.
The National Think Tank Initiative noted that while the situation in Rivers State is grave, with reports of pipeline vandalism, factional disputes, and the breakdown of legislative functions, the suspension of democratically elected officials and the dissolution of legislative functions require transparent justification, legal grounding, and broad consultation to preserve democratic principles.
“We call on all stakeholders, including the Federal Government, the judiciary, and the citizens of Rivers State, to ensure that the pursuit of stability does not come at the expense of democratic principles and the rights of our people,” the statement read.
The group also emphasized the strategic significance of Rivers State as the economic heartbeat of the Niger Delta, warning that any misstep in the delicate context risks igniting inter-tribal conflicts that could destabilize the entire region.
The National Think Tank Initiative reaffirmed its readiness to support efforts toward reconciliation and progress, provided they are rooted in wisdom, restraint, justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
The development comes as the people of Rivers State continue to grapple with the implications of the state of emergency declaration, with many calling for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
