In commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honors on prominent pro-democracy activists, journalists, and lawmakers.
The prestigious awards, bestowed upon the individuals during a special ceremony at the National Assembly, recognize their invaluable contributions to the country’s democratic journey.
Among the notable awardees are family members of late democracy stalwarts, including Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late MKO Abiola, who was posthumously awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
Other posthumous recipients include Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others who fought tirelessly for democracy and human rights.
The list of awardees also features renowned journalists, such as Kunle Ajibade, Nosa Igiebor, and Dapo Olorunyomi, who were recognized for their role in promoting democratic discourse and holding those in power accountable.
Human rights activists, including Femi Falana and Felix Morka, were also honored for their dedication to promoting human rights and democracy.
In his remarks, President Tinubu emphasized the significance of the national honors, stating that they serve as a testament to the sacrifices made by these individuals in the fight for Nigeria’s democracy.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding democratic ideals and promoting transparency and accountability.
The national honors ceremony serves as a reminder of the country’s progress and the sacrifices made by those who fought for democracy.
