Nigeria’s national power grid has collapsed for the ninth time in the last eleven months, causing widespread power outages across the country.
As of 2:45 p.m., all major power generation companies, including Afam IV & V, Delta, Egbin, and Geregu, recorded zero megawatts (MW) output, totaling 0 MW of power generation.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced a planned preventive maintenance on the Ife-Ondo 132kV transmission line scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
“This exercise is necessary to enable TCN Lines Maintenance Engineers to carry out trace maintenance between Towers 6 and 12,” stated Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs.
Mbah added that “Benin DisCo will not be able to offtake electricity to customers on the Ondo and Okitipupa 33kV feeders” during the maintenance, and that bulk power supply would be restored immediately upon completion.
In a public notice, Ikeja Electric stated, “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 05 November 2024 at 13:52Hrs, affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.” The notice was signed by Ikeja Electric’s management.
Jos Electricity Distribution Plc also issued a statement to its customers, attributing the outage to the national grid collapse. “The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid,” said Dr. Friday Adakole Elijah, Head of Corporate Communications.
He noted that the outage began at “about 1352Hours” and assured customers of ongoing efforts to restore power as soon as grid supply stabilizes.
Further updates on restoration efforts are expected as power companies work to resolve the issue.
