Uboh-Ekong Treasure
Hon. Akin Alabi, renowned entrepreneur, lawmaker, and founder of Nigeria’s first sports betting company, NairaBet, has achieved a new milestone this time, not in business, but in tradition. He has been elevated to the prestigious title of Bada Olubadan, advancing to the 20th position in the Otun (civil) line of succession to the Olubadan throne.
Alabi’s rise coincides with the formal ascension of Oba Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, an event that triggered the customary promotion of every chief in the succession line. This process is a distinctive feature of Ibadan’s traditional system, ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition from one Olubadan to the next.
Akin Alabi is widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s most innovative entrepreneurs. Through NairaBet, he introduced the concept of online sports betting to Nigeria, creating jobs and opportunities for thousands of young people. Beyond business, he has authored bestselling books on entrepreneurship, launched youth empowerment initiatives, and represents Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
His elevation to Bada Olubadan is viewed as a symbolic bridge between modern enterprise and traditional heritage, demonstrating that accomplished professionals can rise in civic leadership while contributing to the preservation of cultural values.
