MTN CEO Denies Data Theft Allegations, Attributes Rapid Depletion to Network Upgrades and Video Streaming

Ghazali IbrahimThe Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has categorically denied allegations that the telecom company is stealing customer data.

In an interview at MTN House in Accra, Blewett attributed the rapid depletion of data to changes in network technology and customer behavior.

Blewett’s response comes after widespread complaints from customers in Nigeria and other markets about unfair data consumption.

Many users have taken to social media to express their frustration, with some even reaching out to regulatory bodies, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), demanding investigations into the matter.

However, Blewett emphasized that MTN has no incentive to steal customer data, as it would be financially counterproductive.

“I swear to God as my witness: we have no reason to steal your data,” he said, adding that his personal bonus is tied to MTN’s declared revenue. “If I steal data, I can’t report it—I’d lose my bonus.”

According to Blewett, the shift from 3G and 4G networks to 5G, as well as the increasing use of video streaming, are the primary reasons behind the high data consumption.

“The increased usage is due to enhanced networks and the rise in video streaming,” he explained.

Blewett reassured customers that MTN is focused on improving network performance to meet the growing demands of subscribers.

The company has been investing heavily in network upgrades and expansion, including the rollout of 5G services in Ghana.

The denial by MTN Ghana’s CEO is expected to calm nerves among customers who have been complaining about rapid data depletion.

However, it remains to be seen whether the explanation will satisfy regulatory bodies and customers who have been demanding answers.
