The senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Peter Nwaoboshi has bagged a seven-year jail term over money laundering.
The Lagos Division of the Appeal Court convicted Nwaoboshi on Friday.
In 2018, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had dragged the senator and his two firms, Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electrical Ltd before the Federal High Court, alleging that they laundered N322 million between May and June 2014.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, on June 18, 2021, discharged and acquitted the defendants on two counts of fraud and money laundering.
The EFCC, however, filed an appeal before the appellate court.
On Friday, the Court of Appeal delivered a fresh ruling which upturned the earlier judgement of the High Court and sentenced the lawmaker.
In a statement, the EFCC noted the court also held that Aneke erred in dismissing the charges against the respondents.
βIt said the prosecution had proved the ingredients of the offence and consequently found the defendants guilty as charged,β the statement said.
It would be recalled that in May, Nwaoboshi, who chairs the Senate Committee on Niger Delta, won the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) unopposed to secure his return to the upper legislative chamber.
