A tanker transporting Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) stuck under a bridge in Johannesburg has exploded causing multiple casualties.
The ugly incident happened on Saturday morning after the tanker got stuck under a low bridge in Boksburg city, Johannesburg.
There was a first fire, which firefighters were still trying to put out, before the second one which caused more damage, destroying a fire engine and two vehicles and houses around.
The Tambo Memorial Hospital which was close to the bridge wasn’t spared, with some of its rooftops collapsing due to the intensity of the explosion from the tanker.
Patients were said to be quickly evacuated from the hospital’s casualty to a safer place.
Mr. William Ntladi, emergency services spokesperson confirmed the incident. He was quoted to have said, “Apparently, a gas tanker drove under the subway bridge and got stuck there, and due to friction, it caught fire.
And the fire is now under control,” he assured.
Reports have it that 8 people lost their lives in the incident, leaving scores severely injured.
A video footage from the epicenter showed how the second explosion rocked the scene, as the bridge went up in flames, leaving people scampering for safety.
