The family of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called for a fresh and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The family has also directed his widow, Wunmi, to stop using the “Aloba” surname pending the outcome of a DNA test to confirm the paternity of her son, Liam.
In a statement jointly signed by Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, and the family head, Adedara Felicia Omolayo Aloba, the family said it was determined to uncover the truth about the singer’s death, which occurred on September 12, 2023, under controversial circumstances.
The family revealed that three administrators have been appointed to manage Mohbad’s estate, royalties, and intellectual property. They are Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba. A fourth slot has been reserved for Wunmi but only if a DNA test lawfully confirms that her son is Mohbad’s biological child.
According to the statement, Barrister Oladayo Ogungbe has been appointed as the family’s legal counsel on estate and DNA matters, while Wahab Shittu, SAN, will continue to serve as the family’s legal representative in matters related to the ongoing investigation into Mohbad’s death.
“The Aloba family demands a fresh, transparent, and independent investigation into the death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (Mohbad). We also direct that the widow, Mrs. Wunmi, should desist from using the Aloba surname until the pending DNA issue is resolved,” the statement read.
The family further alleged that no formal marriage was conducted between Mohbad and Wunmi, claiming that traditional rites and bride price payment were never completed. On that basis, they insisted that she has no legal right to continue using the Aloba surname.
In response, Wunmi’s legal representative, Barrister Kabir Akingbolu, dismissed the directive, describing it as “illegal and baseless.” He maintained that Wunmi has every right to continue using her husband’s surname and accused the family of delaying the DNA process.
“No one has exclusive rights over a surname under Nigerian law. My client is ready for the DNA test anytime. The family’s order is sentimental and without legal merit,” Akingbolu said.
Despite the family’s warning, Wunmi has continued to identify as “Wunmi Aloba” on her social media platforms, indicating her unwillingness to comply with the directive.
