The recent interview between Nigerian presidential aide Daniel Bwala and the host of Head to Head has drawn significant attention in Nigeria. At the centre of the discussion is the programme’s interviewer, Mehdi Hasan, a journalist widely known for his confrontational style and rigorous questioning of public figures. The recent tough interview has once again brought him on the spotlight.

These are few things to know about him:

Born on July 10, 1979, in Swindon, England, Hasan is a British-American journalist, broadcaster and author who studied at Christ Church, Oxford.

He began his journalism career behind the scenes as a researcher and producer on the British political programme hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby before moving into broadcast journalism and political commentary.

Hasan later worked with several prominent media organisations including BBC, Channel 4 and the political magazine New Statesman, where he served as senior editor for politics.

He eventually joined Al Jazeera English in 2012, where he became a presenter and gained international recognition for his political interviews and debates.

Hasan is widely known for hosting political programmes such as ‘UpFront’ and ‘Head to Head’, where he questions politicians, intellectuals and policymakers on global issues.

His interviewing style is often described as direct and confrontational and has become his signature.

Observers say he prepares extensively for interviews and challenges guests with previous statements or contradictions in their public records.

Over the years, Hasan has interviewed a wide range of high-profile figures across politics and international affairs. His conversations have included prominent personalities such as whistleblower Edward Snowden and former United States ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, among others.

Hasan also built a strong presence in American media. He hosted ‘The Mehdi Hasan Show’ on MSNBC and on the streaming platform Peacock before the programme ended in 2023.

Following his departure from MSNBC, he launched a digital media platform called Zeteo in 2024, describing it as a space for “hard-hitting interviews and analysis.”

In addition to broadcasting, Hasan is also an author. His books include ‘Ed: The Milibands’ and the ‘Making of a Labour Leader’ and ‘Win Every Argument’, which focuses on debate and persuasion.

Across his career, Hasan has gained a reputation for holding political leaders accountable through sharp questioning and fact-based arguments. His interviews often go viral due to intense exchanges with guests and his willingness to challenge powerful figures directly.

This style was again on display during his recent conversation with Bwala on Al Jazeera’s ‘Head to Head’, where the two debated issues surrounding the administration of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

With more than two decades in journalism and interviews spanning global politics, Hasan remains one of the most recognisable political interviewers on international television today.
