To passers-by, he is just another regular cart pusher trying to make a living for himself and his family. Little will they know that Anibaba was once a man on whose shoulder the mandate of thousands of people rested.
He served as a Councilor in the days of military dictatorship, specifically the General Ibrahim Babangida regime.
Now in his 60s, Anibaba alias Shile Burger works as a cart pusher on the streets of Obalende, Lagos Island.
In an exclusive video obtained by BlackBox Nigeria, the erstwhile politician, dressed in an old blue v-necked shirt, pink shorts and a black face cap, tells his story.
“I have been a councilor in this local government,” he said. The man who recorded the video replied in Yoruba, saying “Irọ ni!” loosely translated to mean “That can’t be true.”
To further validate his claims, the frail looking Anibaba mentioned that the whole of Ajah then had a single councilor.
He further disclosed it was during his tenure that Eti-Osa, Apapa, Surulere and Mainland local governments were created, saying the establishment of the defunct political parties in the Third Republic, the National Republican Convention and Social Democratic Party happened towards the end of his tenure.
“SDP and NRC parties were created when we were leaving office,” he said in Yoruba.
When asked where his jurisdiction covered as a councilor, he said Araromi, behind force headquarters, Ward F1 of Lagos Island local government.
Anibaba stated they (councilors as at then) were paid N500 as salary. He, however, said in Yoruba, “Upon tax deductions, we got N444 in the end.”
Given the conversation, someone in the video knows the story of the ex-councillor now cart pusher.
