May D Claims He Was Once Part of Nigeria’s ‘Big 3’ with Davido and Wizkid

In a recent appearance on the Honest Bunch podcast, popular Nigerian singer May D made a bold claim about his status in the Nigerian music industry during the early stages of his career.

The singer, whose real name is Akinmayokun Awodumila, opined that he was once part of the “Big 3” alongside music superstars Davido and Wizkid, even suggesting that at one point, he was bigger than them both.

May D remembered about the golden days of his career, stating that he, Davido, and Wizkid were at the top of the game.

He even went as far as comparing his hit song “Soundtrack” to Wizkid’s “Holla at Your Boy,” claiming that at the time, his music had a bigger impact.

“I was even like bigger. Wetin be ‘Holla at Your Boy’ compared to ‘Soundtrack’?” he said.

His comments have sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Some fans agreed with May D, remembering his hits like “You Gat Me High” and his prominence in the industry at the time.

Twitter user @hashtagtweets noted, “He wasn’t lying now, if you don’t know just say you don’t know. May D of ‘You Gat Me High’ is top 3 in Nigeria then.”

Others like @fiftyspeaks wrote, “Lack of sufficient success fit make person dey talk abnormal things,”

while @xyz_deadly pointed out, “He had hit songs then, but was never in the big 3. Same way the likes of Asake and Seyi Vibes have hit songs currently but both artistes are not among the Big 3.”

While an X user @TheKayodeBadmus affirmed the momentum of his fame then, he said, “At the time he released Soundtrack and Ile Ijo, May D was bigger than Wiz and Davido but that didn’t make him the biggest act in town. The industry still had Dbanj, Wande Coal and Iceprince as some of the biggest pop stars at the time but May D was obviously bigger than Wizkid and Davido”, @Damiadenuga criticized May D statement about his comparison with Wizkid and Davido. In his words, “There was no moment in Nigerian music history that May D was on the same level of fame with Wizkid & Davido. Some of us witnessed these things, nobody should come & change narrative before our eyes”
