Maryam Sanda has been sentenced to death by hanging

Federal High Court Maltiama has convicted Maryam Sanda of killing her husband, Biliyaminu Bello.

She was however sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of the said crime she committed .

The judge has however stood down the matter for five minutes following the drama that ensued after the conviction was passed. She fled the dock immediately the judge convicted her. However, court officials and prison officials dragged her back into the dock.

Justice Yusuf Halliru Rose for 5 minutes to return for sentencing. Maryham was seen wailing and shouting Inna lilahi waa Ina lilahi rojihun” while efforts are being made by her family and lawyer to console her.

Maryam was charged before the court by the Nigerian police for culpable homicide in November 2017 and are seeking the death penalty in the two-count charge.

The deceased, Bilyaminu Bello, was the son of a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Haliru Bello.

According to the police, the killing was premeditated.

According to the charge, Maryam stabbed her husband with a broken bottle at about 3:50 am on the day of the incident.

The police accused her of an intention to kill her husband.

But the accused pleaded not guilty to the crime. After several attempts, Ms Sanda secured bail with the conditions including an undertaking from her father to produce her in court till the end of the trial.

Charges against Maimuna Aliyu, Ms Sanda’s mother; Aliyu Sanda, her brother, and Sadiya Aminu, her housemaid – for allegedly tampering with evidence by cleaning the blood and other proofs from the crime scene – were later dropped.

She was found guilty of the alleged crime, and sentenced to death by hanging , today 27 January, 2020.
