In a dramatic turn of events, Dewunmi also known as Dewunmi of Lagos, has initiated legal action against telecommunications giant Globacom (Glo) following allegations of the unauthorized re-allocation of his father’s long-standing mobile number.
According to Dewunmi, his father purchased the Glo SIM card for ₦11,000 upon its release and has maintained the number for more than 20 years. The information was disclosed by Dewunmi on his Facebook page “Dewunmi of Lagos”
Despite ongoing use and regular recharges, the SIM suddenly stopped functioning last week Tuesday, prompting Dewunmi’s father to visit Glo’s office in Ikorodu for clarification.
Upon visiting Glo’s Ikorodu office for clarification, Dewunmi’s father was informed that the number had been re-registered to one Abas Yusuf in Abuja since 2014.
Despite linking his National Identification Number (NIN) to the SIM, Dewunmi’s father was allegedly told that the number could not be returned to him.
“This number is what my dad has on all his documents and anything that has to do with his life,” Dewunmi emphasized. “You want him to throw that away?”
Faced with what he perceives as Glo’s inadequate response, Dewunmi has vowed to escalate the matter through formal channels, including filing complaints with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Legal action is also being considered.
In response to mounting pressure, Glo officials have contacted Dewunmi, promising to resolve the issue promptly. “Officers from Globacom have called. They have told him to come in today so they can look at it and fix whatever is happening,” Dewunmi stated.
The incident has raised concerns among other Glo subscribers, with reports of similar issues regarding NIN linkage and SIM revalidation challenges.
As of the time of writing this report, messages sent to Dewunmi by Black Box Nigeria correspondent for a clarified statement have not been responded to.
