A Malaysian gynaecologist, John Tang Ing Chinh has created the world’s first unisex condom.

Reuters reported that the physician believes that the Wondaleaf Unisex Condom will facilitate better sexual health control regardless of their sex or sexual orientation.

Dr Tang, a gynaecologist at medical supplies firm, Twin Catalyst, said the unisex condom can be worn by females or males.

He added that the condom is made from a medical grade material called polyurethane, usually used as a dressing for injuries and wounds.

“Once you put it on, you often don’t realise that it’s there,” says Dr Tang, adding that it is thin and flexible, at the same time, strong and waterproof.

“It’s basically a regular condom with an adhesive covering. It’s a condom with an adhesive covering that attaches to the vagina or penis, as well as covering the adjacent area for extra protection,” he said.

Speaking further on the unisex condom, Dr Tang said that the adhesive is only applied to one side of the condom which means that it can be reversed and used by both genders.

He noted that each box of Wondaleaf contains two condoms, and will cost 14.99 ringgit ($3.61) compared to the average price for a dozen condoms in Malaysia which is 20-40 ringgit.

“Once you put it on, you often don’t realise that it’s there,” he said, referring to dressings made from the material.

Dr Tang assured that the Wondaleaf has gone through several rounds of clinical research and testing, noting that it would be commercially available on the firm’s website by December 2021.

He said, “Based on the number of clinical trials we have conducted, I am quite optimistic that given time it will be a meaningful addition to the many contraceptive methods used in the prevention of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.”
