Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has revealed plans to announce his preferred successor in January 2026, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
This announcement was made during the 11th Omi Tuntun Ramadan Lecture in Ibadan, where Makinde also humorously requested that his billboard in the Isale Alfa area be left intact until his successor’s picture can replace his own.
Makinde’s decision to choose a successor is not surprising, given his earlier statements about playing a role in selecting the next governor.
In October 2024, he mentioned that while he may not have the final say, he would definitely have input in the decision-making process.
The governor’s preferred age range for his successor has also undergone some changes.
Initially, he mentioned a range of 50 to 52 years, but later broadened it to 45 to 55 years.
