Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has elevated 14 high chiefs and Baales in Oyo town to the status of crown-wearing Obas, in a high-profile traditional ceremony held on Friday.

The coronation ceremony took place at Oliveth Heights, Oyo West Local Government Area, where the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, acting on behalf of the governor, presented the new monarchs with their Staffs and Instruments of Office.

Gov. Makinde, in remarks delivered for him, said the elevations reflect his administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions, promoting peace, and fostering development at the grassroots.

He described the monarchs as custodians of culture and urged them to lead with integrity, fairness and service to their people.

The newly elevated Obas include figures such as Oba David Oyediran (Alaaguo of Aguoland), Oba Afonja Mukaila (Baba Eyaji of Oyo), Oba Samuel Odurinde (Alajagba of Oyo), and Oba Ganiyu Busari (Alago-Oja of Ago-Oja Land) among others.

The event drew numerous dignitaries, including representatives of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, former state legislative leaders, lawmakers and top government officials, highlighting the enduring importance of traditional rulers in Oyo’s cultural and governance landscape.

Meanwhile, while the coronation has met with mixed reactions, critics believe that the promotion of the high chief is a deliberate attack to undermining the sovereignty of the Alaafin whose the paramount ruler in Oyo land.
