The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared 281 inmates missing following a flood that damaged the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Maiduguri.
The incident, which also affected staff quarters, occurred after floodwaters caused structural damage to the facility, leading to the evacuation of inmates to a more secure location with the help of other security agencies.
In a statement released by NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, the service assured the public that efforts are underway to track down the missing inmates. “We have their details, including biometrics, and these are being shared with the public and security agencies to assist in recapturing them,” Mr. Umar stated.
The service has already recaptured seven of the escapees and is collaborating with security agencies to ensure the remaining inmates are returned to custody.
Mr. Umar emphasized that the situation does not pose a threat to public safety, and efforts to find the inmates are being actively pursued.
The public has been reassured that both covert and overt security measures are in place to bring the situation under control.
