Luiz Suarez scores as Atlético beat Barcelona 2-0

FC Barcelona have suffered their first defeat of the La Liga 2021/22 season, after losing 2-0 to defending champions Atlético Madrid on Saturday night at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Ronald Koeman’s side’s growing frailty was once again on display on the back of successive 3-0 defeats in the Champions League by Bayern Munich and Benfica.

First half goals from Thomas Lemar and former Camp Nou star Luis Suárez put Atlético ahead in the first half. Efforts by the Catalans to stage a comeback in the second half proved abortive.

For Suárez, getting a goal against his former side was a big win, although his celebration was tastefully muted.

The Uruguayan put his hands together and looked up to the sky, presumably out of respect for the Blaugrana, where he spent six years and scored 198 goals.

Meanwhile, Barcelona will host Valencia at the Camp Nou in their next game billed for October 17, after the two-week international break.
