Ibadan’s unique succession system has once again brought some of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures into the limelight as they take significant steps closer to the revered Olubadan throne.

Among the latest names to climb higher on the chieftaincy ladder is Hon. Akin Alabi, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and member of the House of Representatives. Alabi, who is well known nationally as the founder of NairaBet and a passionate advocate for youth empowerment, has now been elevated to the prestigious title of Bada Olubadan. This advancement places him at number 20 in the Otun (civil) line of succession, marking another steady move toward Ibadan’s highest traditional office.

But Alabi is not alone on this journey. The promotion cycle triggered by the recent ascension of Oba Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland also Barrister Olumuyiwa Makinde, elder brother of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, elevated to Gbonka Olubadan, placing him at number 17. Similarly, Senator Teslim Folarin, one of Oyo State’s most influential politicians and a three-term senator, now moves up to Agbakin Olubadan, ranked number 14.

In a move that further strengthens the Otun (civil) line, Oba Eddy Oyewole, a respected Ibadan High Chief, has been promoted to the highly influential title of Otun Olubadan, making him the second in line to Kabiesi Ladoja.

For many Ibadan indigenes, the promotion of these political figures reinforces the city’s position as a hub of culture and power, where governance and tradition move hand-in-hand to secure the future of the Yoruba race’s largest city.
