Prior to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, only three African teams have reached the quarter-finals in the history of the World Cup.
However, on Tuesday, Morocco became the fourth African country to reach the quarter-finals in the history of the World Cup. They won 3-0 on penalties after a 0-0 draw following extra time against Spain.
Here are three other African countries that have achieved the same feat:
Cameroon (1990)
Cameroon in the 1990 FIFA World Cup was incredible, they defeated defending champions Argentina in their first group stage match by 1-0 and went on to win their remaining group matches and finished at the top of their group.
Valery Nepomnyashchy’s players won the round of 16 fixture against Colombia by a margin of 2-1, the Indomitable Lions were defeated in the quarterfinals by England with a scoreline of 2-3.
Senegal (2002)
Senegal stunned defending champions France in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup, as Papa Bouba Diop’s goal sealed an incredible 1-0 win.
Bruno Metsu’s side rode the wave into the Round of 16, as Henri Camara’s ‘Golden Goal’ saw them beat Sweden 2-1, before they bowed out to Turkey in the last eight.
Ghana (2010)
In the 2010 World Cup, Ghana progressed beyond the group stages, and reached the quarter-finals where they were eliminated by Uruguay.
Ghana was defeated by Uruguay on penalties after Luis Suárez controversially handballed on the goal line deep into extra time, denying Ghana an almost certain winning goal.
