Liberia: George Weah to go head to head with incumbent VP, Joseph Boakai in election rerun

The former Chelsea and Manchester United star is hoping to make history if he emerges President

African football legend, George Weah is set to go head to head with Joseph Boakai as Liberian gets set for an election rerun. The rerun comes up on November 11 and both candidates who were the leading contestants in last week’s first round of elections will be going against each other.

BlackBox Nigeria has earlier reported that George Weah was leading the polls after taking an early lead of the 20 other contestants. The Liberian National Electoral Commission has now revealed that of the 95% votes counted so far, the former Chelsea and Manchester United star leads with 39% to Joseph Boakai’s  29.1%. However like in 2005, George Weah doesn’t have up to 50% of the total votes to be declared winner thereby warranting a rerun between both leading candidates.

VP Boakai is set to give George Weah a battle for his money in the second rounds of elections

George Weah who is a current Senator first contested for President in 2005 but lost to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the re-run. He was a vice presidential candidate in the 2011 polls but the campaign again failed.

George Weah would later go on to become a Senator in a 2014 poll and was inaugurated in 2015. The first and only African to FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or, Weah is hoping to finally lead his people, a 12-year-quest.

Joseph Boakai on the other hand became President Sirleaf’s second-in-command after the 2005 elections and has been in office for 12 years. Although Mr. Boakai has since fallen out with his principal whom he is now seeking to replace.
