LASWA Celebrates Accident Free Waterways In 6 Months, Commits To Achieving Gov Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Agenda
The General Manager of Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel has committed his agency to the improvement of water Transport safety and the THEMES agenda of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration in Lagos state.
In a statement made available to BlackBox Nigeria, the LASWA boss pointed out that zero boat accidents on waterways were recorded in the last six months in Lagos
”The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu has broken record in Water Transportation safety with near zero waterways accidents in Lagos State in the last 6 months according to the official records of the State Inland Waterways Authority – LASWA.
”The state government through the Lagos State Waterways Authority LASWA continues to improve on safety guidelines, regulations and enforcement for the smooth Operations of water transportation in the state, ” the statement reads in part.
The waterways regulatory agency in Lagos State further opined that aside the continuous routine check-up and regular inspection of ferries plying the waterways and the removal of water hyacinth causing obstruction to smooth navigation, LASWA donated thousands of life jackets to commercial boat Operators and pupils in the riverine communities of Lagos to promote the use of life jackets and the safety awareness programme.
”The LASWA patrol team composed of Water-Guards and officers of the Counter-Terrorist Unit of the Nigerian Police in collaboration with the Marine Police are always on standby day and night monitoring all activities on the waterways while ensuring safety and security of both lives and infrastructures.
”The results of these efforts have resulted in a drastic reduction in Waterways incidences to the extent that no single mishap was recorded on the Lagos waterways in the last 6 months which is an indication of improvement in water Transport safety and a proof of the excellent result of the THEMES agenda of the state government.
”Sustainable investment in the Inland Waterways sector will continue to prevent accidents and increase public confidence in the sector.”
