The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, has appealed to striking staff members to return to work on Monday, August 11, 2025, following a two-week industrial action.
BlackBox Nigeria learnt that the university’s staff went on a strike following outcry over poor welfare of members— a move that has affected both students and the staff.
In a recent statement posted on the university official page, titled “It’s Time to Move Forward”, the VC acknowledged the reasons behind the strike but stressed the need to prioritise the institution’s academic calendar, reputation, and the welfare of students.
Professor Olatunji-Bello highlighted a series of staff welfare initiatives implemented since she assumed office in September 2021, including 100% end-of-year bonuses, prompt promotions, payment of earned academic allowances, and the implementation of the recent 25%–35% federal salary increase.
She noted that the state government has made offers in response to workers’ demands, which, while not meeting every expectation, should be accepted in the spirit of compromise.
“We are not on opposite sides. We are partners, bound by the same vision,” she said.
In conclusion, she urged staff to return to duty as a show of unity and commitment to the university’s progress.
