LASU Mourns Loss of Retired Mathematics Professor Michael Ajetunmobi

The Lagos State University (LASU) community is in mourning following the passing of Professor Michael O. Ajetunmobi, a distinguished mathematician and former Head of the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science.

He died at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence and service.

He was also the former vice chairman, Ikorodu Division Resource Development Group.

Prof. Ajetunmobi was a pillar of LASU’s mathematics programme, noted not only for his scholarship but for his mentorship of generations of students.

According to The Impact, he served as Head of Department and was among the first professors to shape the mathematics faculty’s direction, helping to build it into one of the university’s respected academic units.

Beyond his contributions in teaching, Ajetunmobi spoke publicly about mathematics as an art and a reflection of structure and creativity

His death is a significant loss for LASU and the broader academic world, which has lost an intellectual committed to raising the bar in higher education.

Colleagues, students, and alumni have expressed grief and paid tribute to his devotion, integrity, and transformative impact on both the university and the field of mathematics.
