Lagos State University (LASU) has expanded its academic structure with the introduction of the Faculty of Computing, a development in the university’s commitment to technological advancement and digital education. This makes it the 16th faculty at LASU and the fifth established under the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM.
The announcement was made during the 28th Convocation Press Conference held at the Senate Chamber of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo. Addressing members of the press, Prof. Olatunji-Bello emphasized the university’s vision to become a leading institution in computing and digital technologies.
The newly introduced Faculty of Computing will consist of five departments: Department of Computer Science, Department of Cyber Security, Department of Data Science, Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Department of Software Engineering
These departments will offer various academic programs tailored to equip students with industry-relevant skills in an increasingly digital world. The establishment of the faculty aligns with global trends in education, emphasizing innovation, artificial intelligence, big data, and cybersecurity.
As part of its commitment to technological growth, LASU has also made investments in ICT infrastructure. The university recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art 1-petabyte Tier 3 Data Centre, designed to support data archiving and repository services for curated information within Lagos State and beyond. Additionally, a 2,000-seater Computer-Based Test Centre is under construction to facilitate a seamless examination process for students.
Furthermore, LASU has developed TALKSPACE, its proprietary online meeting application, enhancing digital communication and remote learning experiences for students and faculty members.
The establishment of the Faculty of Computing is expected to position LASU as a leader in ICT education in Nigeria, producing graduates who are well-equipped to tackle global technological challenges.
