Jerry MaCharty Kabiri, a graduate from the Faculty of Sciences, Lagos State University, Ojo, who also served as former Social Director of Lagos State University Students Union(LASUSU) during his University days, has initiated an essay competition aimed at fostering youth leadership and civic engagement in the Owerri Federal Constituency, Imo State.
Kabiri, a real estate entrepreneur who is passionate about youth empowerment, launched the maiden Owerri Federal Constituency Youth Essay Competition, designed to engage young minds in shaping the future of their community.
The competition, officially launched in November 2024, encouraged youths aged 20-35 to explore how they can drive economic, political, and social progress in Owerri.
With the theme “Engaging the Next Generation: How Young Leaders Can Drive Economic, Social, and Political Progress in Owerri”, entries were received from participants from different institutions, including people with disabilities.
Jerry Kabiri, the visionary behind the competition, shared his enthusiasm for the initiative: “This essay competition is more than just a writing contest. It’s about inspiring young people to think critically about their roles as future leaders and how they can contribute to the development of Owerri.”
Kabiri, known for his leadership and advocacy in the educational sector, has leveraged his experience and network to create a platform that nurtures the next generation of change-makers.
The competition culminated in an award ceremony in January 2025, where the winners were honoured for their exceptional contributions to the future of Owerri.
A panel of esteemed judges, including professors, community leaders, and youth advocates, evaluated the submissions based on originality, relevance, and feasibility of the proposed solutions.
However, Eziefula Chidera Angel from Owerri Municipal emerged winner, securing a prize of #200,000. Also, Osuji Ugoeze Sylvia, from the same community as Eziefula clinched second position with a cash prize of #150,000 and Okere Anselem Chidozie from Owerri North Local Government, emerged third place, securing a cash prize of #100,000.
In a dramatic turn of events, three minors submitted entries and a different category was created for that purpose.
