Lagos University Dismisses Three Staff Members Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

The Governing Council of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has dismissed three staff members over allegations of sexual harassment, reinforcing the institution’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct within the academic environment.

The affected staff members, Mr. Nurudeen Hassan, Mr. Kareem Arigbabu, and Mr. Olayinka Uthman, were dismissed with immediate effect after a thorough investigation and deliberation by the university’s authorities.

According to a statement issued by LASUSTECH, the dismissals were approved under Section 5.5.2(v) of the University Senior Staff Conditions of Service, which addresses acts of gross misconduct, including sexual harassment.

“The university takes allegations of sexual harassment seriously, as they compromise the institution’s image and disrupt the academic environment,” the statement read. “The Governing Council’s decision reflects LASUSTECH’s unwavering commitment to a safe, respectful, and inclusive campus community.”

The action is part of growing efforts across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions to clamp down on sexual misconduct in academia.

Notably, Lagos State University (LASU) had in 2018 dismissed several staff members over similar offenses. Those affected included Sunkanmi Odubunmi, Associate Professor, Department of Economics; Ajani Ogunwande, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Emmanuel Gbeleyi, Lecturer II, Department of Anatomy at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja.

Other high-profile cases include the 2021 dismissal of Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu and Dr. Samuel Oladipo by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) following the BBC’s Sex for Grades documentary, and the 2018 sacking of Professor Richard Akindele from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) for demanding sex from a student.
