Lagos State Leads Nigeria’s VAT Contributions with ₦2.75 Trillion in 2024

In a recent development, Lagos State has emerged as the largest contributor to Nigeria’s Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue in 2024, generating an impressive ₦2.75 trillion.

This contribution accounts for a significant 54% of the country’s total non-import VAT revenue, according to a report by Agora Policy.

Rivers State follows closely behind with ₦832.69 billion, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) contributes ₦303.64 billion to the national VAT pool.

Oyo State ranks fourth with ₦272.41 billion, and Kano State rounds out the top five with ₦77.76 billion.

The report further reveals that the remaining 33 states combined contributed just 19% of the total VAT revenue. Contributions from these states range from Delta’s ₦73.39 billion to Imo’s ₦4.38 billion.

Agora Policy, a think tank focused on addressing national issues, presented this comprehensive breakdown, drawing attention to the disparities in revenue generation among Nigerian states.

– Akwa Ibom: ₦46.93 billion
– Others: Contributions continue with states like Adamawa (₦42.01 billion), Borno (₦35.29 billion), and Niger (₦34.84 billion) rounding out the top contributors.
