The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Head of Service of Lagos State, Bode Agoro, emphasizing the government’s support for traditional institutions and promotion of indigenous traditions to preserve cultural heritage.

“It is hereby notified for general information that this Year’s Isese Day Celebration will be held on Tuesday, 20th August, 2024. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved that Tuesday, 20th August 2024, be declared a Work-Free Day for Public Servants in the State,” the statement reads.

Isese Day is observed as an official public holiday in states like Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Kwara, Edo, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, and Kogi, aiming to strengthen cultural identity among followers of traditional religions.

This marks the first time the Lagos State government has granted a holiday for Isese Day following the United Nations’ recognition of August 20 as World Traditional Religion Day.
