The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 28-year-old John Samuel, a notorious armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin, and ex-convict, believed to be behind the violent gold jewellery robbery attack on Allen Avenue, Ikeja, last month.
Samuel, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, was tracked and apprehended by police operatives in his Epe hideout on Friday, September 19, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m.
According to the police, the suspect had only recently regained freedom after serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery, but quickly returned to violent crime.
On August 18, 2025, he allegedly shot and wounded businessman Gbenga Obama in broad daylight at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, before dispossessing him of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables.
CCTV footage of the attack, police said, clearly showed Samuel firing at the victim with an English pistol while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle for their escape. The victim, who sustained serious gunshot injuries, has since been treated and discharged from hospital.
In his confessional statement, Samuel admitted to selling the stolen jewellery for N4 million, far below its actual value. The Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of his gang.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the operatives for the breakthrough and assured residents that discreet investigations are underway.
“Lagos has no hiding place for criminals. We will continue to protect residents and ensure they go about their lawful activities in peace,” he said.
The police further reiterated their commitment to safety and security across the state, warning criminally minded individuals to desist or face the full weight of the law.
