The Lagos State Government has expressed deep condolences to renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, over the death of her son, Nkanu, and has ordered an investigation into allegations of medical negligence linked to the incident.

In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Health, signed by the special adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the government said it was aware of Ms. Adichie’s report concerning the tragic death of her son following a medical incident at a private healthcare facility in Lagos on January 6.

On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, the state commiserated with Ms. Adichie and her family, describing the death of a child as a profound tragedy. The government assured the family of its commitment to justice and accountability.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, according to the statement, has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to immediately commence a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation is aimed at determining both the immediate and remote causes of the death.

HEFAMAA has since begun its inquiry and has visited the private health facility involved as part of the ongoing investigation. The agency will review all allegations, including compliance with clinical protocols, professional conduct, and patient safety standards.

The agency will also collaborate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a credible and professional review process. The findings, the government said, will be made public at the conclusion of the investigation.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its zero tolerance for medical negligence, warning that any individual or institution found culpable will face the full weight of the law. It urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while due process is followed.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of all residents and extended its condolences once again to the Adichie family.

In a related development, the alleged hospital has publicly released a statement, empathizing with the affected family over the loss of their child.

They further reiterate that some of the reports flown online contained some inaccuracies, further prompting their release of public statement.

“We feel it necessary, for the record, to clarify that some of the reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies”, part of the statement reads.

They further argued that the deceased son was medically attended to in line with clinical procedures and standards after being referred from two pediatric centers, in consultation with the family recommendations to sedate where clinically indicated.

The hospital management revealed they had commenced detailed investigation consistent with clinical governance standards and best practices, promising to uphold transparency and responsibility in clinical and regulatory processes.

“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply.”
