Lagos State took a major step toward embracing maritime innovation with the launch of the “Omi Eko” project, spearheaded by the state’s water transport agency, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
At the launch of the project in Ikeja on Friday, Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu appointed LASWA’s General Manager, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, as the new Special Adviser on Blue Economy for the state.
The Omi Eko initiative, outlined on the Lagos State government website, aims to transform Lagos’ inland waterways into a cleaner, smarter, and more efficient urban transport system, reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable maritime commerce.
The project is also positioned as a cornerstone for Lagos’ blue‑economy ambitions linking environmental stewardship with economic opportunity.
In announcing the appointment, the governor emphasized the importance of the blue economy for the city’s future, saying that the new role for Emmanuel will ensure a focused push on harnessing waterways for economic growth, job creation, and climate resilience.
Emmanuel’s experience as LASWA MD was highlighted as a key reason for entrusting him with the expanded portfolio.
The appointment comes amid Lagos’ broad drive to diversify its economy and deepen its green‑growth agenda.
Emmanuel has already shared initial media remarks about his new role, stating that he looks forward to collaborating across sectors; transport, environment, tourism, and urban planning to deliver the Omi Eko vision.
He described the move as “an exciting opportunity to align Lagos’ waterways with global blue‑economy trends.”
