Lagos Introduces New Traffic System, Imposes N20,000, N50,000 Fines for Traffic Light, Speed Limit Violations
The Lagos State Government has introduced fines for traffic light violations and speeding.
The development, which aims to reduce road accidents and encourage responsible driving, was revealed by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a media briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja on Thursday, February 6.
Effective immediately, the state will enforce fines of N20,000 for running red lights and N50,000 for overspeeding.
Osiyemi emphasized that this new policy would leverage advanced technology to ensure stricter monitoring and enforcement of road traffic laws across Lagos.
The Commissioner outlined the key routes with specific speed limits, which include: Alapere-Ogudu Road with a speed limit of 80 km/h and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Allen Avenue Road Junction, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road with a speed limit of 60 km/h.
Osiyemi further unveiled the deployment of four new Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) to monitor and manage traffic violations.
These systems are categorized into Checkpoint Sites for speed detection and E-Police Sites for monitoring various traffic violations.
Meanwhile, E-Police Sites have been installed at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.
These E-Police Sites are designed to detect a variety of traffic violations, including running red lights, illegal U-turns, non-compliance with lane discipline, and reverse driving on highways.
