The Lagos State Government has warned clubs and bars in the state to desist from noise pollution or risk getting shut down.
Tunji Bello, the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, made this known in a statement on Sunday.
He noted that enforcement raids were carried out in Lekki following repeated complaints by residents of the area.
He said, “All clubs, bars and lounges in the state, especially in the Lekki part, are to desist from noise pollution or risk being shut. Apart from putting such clubs or bars under lock and key, the owners of such relaxation points will also be prosecuted according to the dictates of the law. The exercise will be a continuous one.
“No one or organisation will be treated as a sacred cow in the latest campaign because research has shown that noise pollution is one of the causative factors for reduced lifespan.”
Bello disclosed that environmental officers raided one Prest club in Lekki due to numerous complaints about noise pollution.
“The enforcement officers of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency were directed to raid Prest Jazz Club on Admiralty Way, Lekki, following complaints of noise pollution. When the enforcement officers got to the clubs, different giant speakers and musical instruments were seen assembled for stage plays and shows, blaring music, prompting its closure,” he said.
