From Monday, August 11, 2025, over 6,000 commuters in Lagos will be transported daily as the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line between Marina and Mile 2 moves to a 10-minute service interval.

The change will cut journey time by eight minutes and is expected to raise weekday trips from 72 to 90, ensuring more frequent trains and reduced waiting times for passengers. On Sundays, the service will remain at 22 trips.

Past data showed that 2.37 million passengers used the service over 15 months, averaging about 5,267 passengers per day. With a 25% increase in weekday trips from 72 to 90, the system’s capacity will grow, allowing it to now handle approximately 6,580 passengers daily.

BBN360 has confirmed that according to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the reduced headway time between train departures translates to about 44% in time savings, giving passengers a faster and more efficient travel experience.

To sustain the new schedule, four train sets will operate during peak hours, while two trains will handle off-peak periods.

LAMATA’s Managing Director, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo said the boost in capacity was made possible by new rolling stock acquired through the Lagos State Government, with support from the Federal Government.

“We are excited to facilitate the increase in the number of trips since our commitment is to have a world-class, sustainable transport system that satisfies stakeholders and drives the growth of Lagos,” Akinajo said.

She noted that the current increase in trips is a preview of future operations when the Blue Line is extended to Okokomaiko, a project scheduled for completion in the last quarter of 2026.

The Blue Line began passenger operations on September 4, 2023, and has already moved over five million passengers. The ongoing second phase is expected to be finished by the end of 2026, with full operations to Okokomaiko starting in the first quarter of 2027.
