With the passing of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, traditional succession processes have begin and all indications point to former Oyo State Governor, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the next in line to ascend the prestigious throne.
Ladoja, a respected statesman and politician, currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan, placing him next in the line of succession under the traditional chieftaincy hierarchy of Ibadanland.
The Olubadan system operates on a unique and well-structured rotational line between two ruling lines, the Otun and the Balogun lines with the most senior chief on the vacant line ascending the throne.
Following the demise of Oba Olakulehin, who rose through the Balogun line, the throne now rotates to the Otun line, where Ladoja stands as the most senior and eligible candidate.
Ladoja, 81, is a prominent figure in Ibadan and Nigeria at large. He served as the Executive Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007 and has remained an influential political voice and traditional figure since then.
Sources close to the Olubadan-in-Council confirmed that once mourning rites and traditional consultations are completed, Ladoja’s ascension may be formally announced.
While the transition process is expected to follow established customs, it will also require the approval of the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Many in Ibadan have welcomed it with cautious optimism, citing Ladoja’s experience, wisdom, and long-standing contributions to the city and Yoruba culture.
If installed, High Chief Ladoja will become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the youngest in recent time, further cementing his legacy as both a political and traditional leader.
Funeral arrangements for the late Oba Olakulehin and formal communications regarding the next Olubadan are expected in the coming days.
