The Olubadan-designate of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has decided to postpone his return to Ibadan until July 28, 2025, as a mark of respect for the late 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died on Monday, July 7, after a brief illness.

According to palace sources, the postponement aligns with the traditional 21-day mourning period observed in Ibadanland following the death of an Olubadan.

The mourning officially commenced on Tuesday, July 8, in line with longstanding custom.

Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and next in line to ascend the Olubadan throne, is said to have chosen to remain away from the city during the mourning period to avoid any semblance of celebration during what should be a time of solemnity.

An inside source told The PUNCH, “Oba Ladoja will not come to Ibadan until the 21 days of mourning are over. From July 7 till July 27 or 28. He is opposed to any form of rejoicing instead of mourning at this period.”

The source explained that Ladoja had directed key traditional chiefs — Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Amidu Ajibade, and Ekerin Balogun, Akeem Adewoyin — to reopen the temporarily closed Olubadan Palace at Oke-Aremo to receive mourners and sympathisers on his behalf.

Ladoja, who is deeply respected for his commitment to Ibadan customs and values, reportedly reprimanded individuals who had previously attempted to celebrate prematurely following the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, emphasizing the need for decorum and cultural sensitivity.

“Oba Ladoja believes in what the Bible says — you mourn with those who are mourning and celebrate with those who are celebrating,” the source added.

When contacted for confirmation, Adeola Oloko, the media aide to Oba Ladoja, said simply, “I don’t know when Baba Ladoja will be around.”

Ladoja is expected to return to Ibadan at the end of the mourning period, when preparations for his formal installation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland are likely to begin.
