Labour Party Disowns Obi’s Bye-Election Directive, Urges Members to Vote Party Candidates

The Labour Party (LP) has strongly discredited a directive by its former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, asking party members to vote for another political party in the upcoming August 16 bye-election.

In a press release signed by Barr. Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the party, the LP described Obi’s comments as “misleading, mischievous, and delusional,” urging members and supporters to ignore the directive and vote for Labour Party candidates.

Abure accused Obi of hypocrisy and political inconsistency, stating that the former presidential candidate has become an “Uber politician” with no firm loyalty, driven solely by a desperation to lead Nigeria at all costs.

The party further blamed Obi for allegedly fueling the internal crisis within the LP, citing the controversial stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia on September 4, 2024, which he co-hosted with Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.

“He received goodwill from the party leadership but paid them back with betrayal,” the statement read.

“Obi lacks the competence, character, and capacity to actualise the vision of a new Nigeria.”

Despite Obi’s actions, the LP confirmed that its candidates are legally on the ballot for the bye-election and called on members across the states involved to remain focused and loyal to the party.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to participating in all future elections and expressed confidence in its ability to win at the polls.
