The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has released the official timetable for the much-anticipated local government elections, setting July 12, 2025, as the date for voters across the state’s 57 council areas to head to the polls.

According to the schedule made public on Friday, April 11, by the commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Tope Ojo, campaigns by political parties are expected to kick off from Friday, April 18, and will run for nearly three months, ending on Wednesday, July 9.

This gives aspirants ample time to canvass support across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

LASIEC also announced July 19 as the date for any necessary re-run elections, just a week after the main poll.

Other key dates outlined in the timetable include a crucial meeting between LASIEC and all registered political parties scheduled for April 15, followed by the publication of detailed election guidelines on April 17. Political parties will also have a designated window from June 18 to June 25 to submit the names of substituted or sole candidates contesting in the elections.

The commission, led by retired Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, emphasized that the timetable was carefully designed to ensure a smooth transition and avoid a leadership vacuum at the local council level.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile assured Lagosians of the commission’s commitment to delivering a “free, fair, inclusive, and credible” election, urging political stakeholders to strictly adhere to the schedule and electoral rules.

The July 12 poll will see elections into all 57 chairmanship positions and 376 councillorship seats across the state.
