Kano State was thrown into deep mourning on Wednesday following the sudden deaths of two serving members of the State House of Assembly; Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo and Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji within hours of each other.
Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, who represented Ungogo Constituency, was the first to be reported dead earlier in the day. Barely hours later, news broke that Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, representing Kano Municipal Constituency, had collapsed and died after hearing the news of his friend.
Both lawmakers were known for their active roles in legislative matters and grassroots engagement in their constituencies. The cause of death for both men remains undisclosed at the time of filing this report.
The tragic news was confirmed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Kano State Governor, who described the deaths as “a great loss to the state and its people.” He noted that the state government had been shocked by the coincidence and extended condolences to the families of the deceased lawmakers.
Colleagues in the House of Assembly have also expressed grief, describing the two men as committed public servants who dedicated themselves to the progress of their constituencies and the state at large.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon in accordance with Islamic rites. The Kano State House of Assembly now faces two sudden vacancies, potentially triggering by-elections in the coming months.
As the year draws to a close, the twin losses cast a sorrow mood over Kano’s political landscape.
