Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced a public holiday on Monday, June 2, 2025, to mourn the passing of 22 athletes in a tragic accident.
The athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State when the incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, BlackBox Nigeria reported.
The governor, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
He directed the people of Kano to observe the public holiday to pray and sympathize with the bereaved families.
The state government has also announced a N1 million cash donation to each of the families of the deceased athletes and officials.
Additionally, food items will be provided to assist the families in making burial arrangements.
The accident occurred when a vehicle carrying about 35 passengers, mainly athletes and officials, fell off a bridge in Dakstalle town, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
The governor’s directive for a public holiday is a mark of respect for the departed souls, and the government urges Imams and Muslims to offer prayers for the victims and their families.
