Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the Democratic Party presidential nominee with the support of 2,350 delegates. If successful in the November general election against Republican nominee Donald Trump, she would become the first female President of the United States.
“I am honored to be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. I will officially accept the nomination next week. This campaign is about bringing people together, driven by love of country, to strive for our best,” she wrote on X.
Harris is the first black woman and South Asian woman to lead a major US political party’s White House bid.
Her nomination followed endorsement from former President Barack Obama. Bowing to pressure from party leaders, President Joe Biden opted out of his re-election bid and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
