JUST IN: One passenger dead as boat capsizes in Lagos

A boat ferrying some passengers has capsized in Lagos State.

BlackBox Nigeria gathered that the incident occured on Monday afternoon.

The boat, which was said to have carried passengers and left the CMS/Marina ferry terminal en route Ikorodu, suffered a mishap, leaving one passenger dead.

It was learnt that the said boat had been flagged for inspection by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA). However, it avoided LASWA jetties to load passengers at the jetty controlled by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

Meanwhile, other passengers have been rescued and the boat moved to safer harbour.

Confirming the development in a statement on Monday, NIWA Lagos Area Manager, Engr. Sarat Braimah identified the ill-fated boat as “TEMI 3 Global”, saying it was ferrying 17 passengers.

The statement read, “Fifteen minutes into the journey near Adekunle Waterfront, the boat hit an underwater obstacle which broke the hull of the boat and this resulted to the capsize of the boat.

“There were immediate mobilization to the site of incident by National Inland Waterways Authority Search and Rescue Team, LASWA, Marine Police, Fishermen and other boat operators leading to the rescue of sixteen (16) persons alive while one person died while on the way to the hospital.”

The Monday incident comes months after a similar accident in Lagos when a boat capsized after it left the Five Cowries terminal in Ikoyi area of the State, in July 2021.
