#July4th: Americans Celebrate 241 Years Of Independence

Unarguably the most powerful and influential nation on earth, today marks the 241st independence of the United States of America.

Today marks the 241st year since the Americans became independent of the British who like Nigeria also colonised them.

Although the Americans moved for independence n July 2, 1776, it was actualised two days later leadingp to the significance of the July 4 jamboree.

John Adams who would later become the 2nd elected President of the US had written to his wife saying…”The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Unlike what he predicted however, the victory only came two days after and this has been significant as the Declaration of Independence was adopted by theContinental Congress.

Ironically, John Adams died on July 4th.

Nigeria is barely 57 years yet many say it has come of age…apparently the US is an ancestor!
