Veteran journalist and editor, Kunle Ajibade has been honored with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national award for his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s democratic discourse.
The award was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the Democracy Day celebrations held at the National Assembly chamber.
Kunle Ajibade is the Executive Editor/Director of PMNEWS and TheNEWS Magazine. He was arrested and sentence to life for charges of treason and treasonable felony alongside former president Olusegun Obasanjo and three other journalists during Abacha’s military rule in 1995.
He was there until the country’s return to democracy.
Among the honoree is journalism icon, Mr Dapo Olorunyomi, Premium Time’s Publisher, Bayo Onanuga, the Special adviser to the president on Information and strategic planning.
Ajibade’s dedication to journalism has spanned several decades, during which he has been a vocal advocate for press freedom, human rights, and social justice.
He was known for most of his work during Nigeria’s military rule demanding return to democracy, a fight which cost him prison time.
His work has had a profound impact on Nigeria’s media landscape, inspiring a new generation of journalists.
The national award recognizes Ajibade’s commitment to holding those in power accountable and promoting democratic values in Nigeria.
His contributions to the country’s media industry have been invaluable, and this recognition is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
