Defeated former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua is set to give the title another shot as Ukrainian fighter and current champion, Oleksandr Usyk has confirmed the request for a rematch.
Usyk, who currently holds the WBO, WBA, and IBF titles, called for the promoters to schedule date for the rematch and also put other things in place. He, however, hopes the fight takes place during the Spring of next year which falls within March to June.
“The rematch is going to happen. The promoters are going to deal with the dates and everything. The nearest it will be is spring, or close to that,” the WBO heavyweight champion said during an interview with The Independent.
Meanwhile, a win against Anthony Joshua will see Usyk face Tyson Fury for a Unified Title Bout. The Gyspsy King currently holds The Ring Magazine Title and the WBC which will be up for grab for whoever wins the rematch between Usyk and Anthony Joshua.
Recall that Anthony Joshua lost his WBO Heavyweight titles to Oleksandr Usyk back in September at Tottenham Hotspur stadium. The Nigerian-British boxer was dealt a huge blow by the Ukrainian leading to him getting hospitalized.
In what could be described as avenging Klitschko, Usyk reclaimed the belts Anthony Joshua had won from his fellow countryman Vladmir Klitschko back in 2017. Joshua was outclassed at the September duel, but he hopes to retrieve his titles at the rematch.
On a possible face-off against Tyson Fury, Usyk, though lauded Fury’s mastery, played down the fight against The Gypsy King. Rather, his attention is on the rematch against Anthony Joshua.
“Of course, it’s not always good to think about another opponent when you have a fight lined up but what I like about Fury is his boxing competence. Stylistically, he’s very technical. He’s educated in the ring. I think it would be a good fight, I’d have to bring my best game,” Usyk said.
